Featured image: Jackalope Moon I first started drawing jackalopes because I realised I'd spent a lot of time drawing legendary creatures from other parts of the world, and not nearly enough exploring my own little corner; the tokens in this one's antlers give a nod to some of the North American elements that compose its environment. Rabbits and their cousins, hares, are a familiar symbol of spring, but they have other associations, as well. One that is common in many cultures is to cast them as storytellers - inventors of tall tales, if you will. They are another trickster creature, full of cleverness and an inability to stay out of trouble - they are forever raiding gardens, outmaneuvering predators, and pulling the proverbial wool over the eyes of others to get what they want and provide for their (constantly expanding) families. This reputation for trickery and misdirection is one of the reasons rabbits and hares are also associated with the moon, which casts a glamour of light and darkness across the world by night that makes the familiar suddenly appear strange and wondrous. Jackalopes take this even further - stories of animal tricksters told and popularised by human ones during the early westward expansion of European colonial settlers. These stories, as they are prone to do, took on a life of their own over time, and to this day jackalopes are known and loved throughout the Midwest United States. These lightweight wall tiles are 8x8” wide & about 3/4” deep, ready to mount on any hard (non-fibrous) surface. Non-permanent bonding strip on the back allows you to rearrange or move your art without damaging your walls or other surfaces so you can have the art you love wherever you are! No frame required: just peel, stick, and enjoy.
